Chapter 1:
Journey to Fairbanks:
July 01,2013-
Finally it is the day when i embark on this amazing journey from Buffalo, NY to Fairbanks,AK.
I am dropped to the airport by this nice friend of mine. I am not a very FB (Facebook guy) but somehow i felt like bragging about this trip.So the first thing i do as soon as i sit, waiting for the boarding announcement, at the Buffalo terminal is update my FB status to "Wilderness Unlmtd". For the first time i feel that i am really prepared, by prepared i mean organized, for this trip. May be that is because i am almost 30 and somehow all the chromosomes or genes or some Biological process forces my brain to be more responsible and BOOM you are a renewed person (Bullshit !!).
I have 2 hrs to kill and so i start by checking Google Maps for Minneapolis. Also, my genuine interest in statistics tells me that all the hot girls fly out of buffalo on weekends and the only people i see at my boarding gate are retired, old and middle aged humans. Well one reason could be that the tickets are cheaper on Mondays and they are (like me) trying to save money. I sound Cheap ( lets blame this on 30 as well).
For the 50th time i check my FB for likes on my status, no one yet.People travelling to Minneapolis look so much different from buffalo. Different in terms of skin, texture and color. Is this actually true or a fragment of my imagination. Let me tell you by now i am down 2 small (tall in Starbucks language) cups of coffee and probably thinking more than necessary. As i reach Minneapolis airport i have more likes. I definitely have a statistical reasoning for this and that is everyone with a wifi connectivity will check their FB first thing in the morning. So basically by studying the likes one can study the sleeping habits of your social network. Apologize for digressing but waiting at Minneapolis airport is boring and so you suffer by reading this unnecessary stupid post along with me.I am hoping Fairbanks will be more interesting and such a statistical thinking will not resurface.
Captain announces that he is about to land in Fairbanks and i think finally i am here. At other airports as soon as a flight is about to land you peep out of the window to get a preview of the city. Aerial view of a city is simply amazing, you feel like you are looking at a huge colony of fireflies. But Fairbanks was different, all you can see here is tall trees, small streams merge into a muddy river and this is what i mean by Wilderness Unlmtd. I look for some civilization in this Last Frontier but all you can see now is the air strip and the Fairbanks Airport. If this is what you have always longed for you have made the right choice.
Cabs are available right outside the airport and will cost about $ 16 to reach Billies Backpackers Inn.It is a simple and friendly hostel. The restrooms are clean, wifi is free and bunk beds are comfortable. What more can you expect for $30 a night. The hosts are very friendly and the place is walking distance to some not so expensive food place. If you have never stayed at a hostel then i would suggest you do experience it. You can reserve a place by calling Billie or email her. All the contact information can be found by using google.
