Salt Flats and Flamingos, India

24th Feb,2014

I'm on my yearly break from NYC financial markets visiting a small town in the southern Gujarat called Bhavnagar. If you Google the name you will come across a wiki page, a university link and some other useless links about Asias ship breaking yard and so on. This all sounds boring on a blog that in the past has discussed about beautiful hikes and Dalton highway.

I have always seen salt flats on the outskirts on Bhavnagar. If you are travelling by road during mid summer you will come across huge piles and piles of white snow like mountains. This is  actually salt that has dried from the sea water that was trapped. These mountains of snowflakes gives a false impression to your eyes as in the mid summer a resident of saurashtra can confirm that the day time temp reaches 42 degrees Celsius very easily.

But today is  a very pleasant evening. I take a ride with my aunt to these snow dunes where the water is yet not dried and my aunt, a photographer and a bird enthusiast herself, has confirmed a herd of Flamingos. Not more than 10 mins drive from the main city we reach these man made ponds. The first image that comes to ones mind is that of a Pink carpet floating on the water, these are actually flamingoes feasting. I have not seen these many in one place.

Erie County Forest

I am not sure what is more beautiful the road to Erie county forest or the hike itself. If you are not hiking/mountaineering/outdoor person this would be one of the options you should explore. The ride itself very scenic , especially in the fall. On the way to the park if you take the country road(which you should), you will come across a range of small hills which look as if an artist has applied pastel colors on the leaves. The drive is smooth and you will come cross over a small town called Holland. I have never been to actual Holland but i believe this is the prettiest town i have visited in the vicinity of Buffalo. The hike itself is not too long but you can easily get lost as the signs disappear and appear every few feet. You are bound to get confused but stick to a path and stop when you don't see a path sign and then try to spot one. If you don't spot one go to the previous one and try to spot one around you. Trust me its an experience and don't worry you are n...

Incredible Wave - Utah

Wave / Vermillion Cliffs / Coyote Butte Location : Coyote Butte is located near Kanab Utah. The road to the trailhead is rough but one does not need a high clearance vehicle. Accommodation : I did see someone camp near the trailhead not sure if it is allowed. However, Kanab is a town and lot of accommodation can be found here. I used airbnb for my trip to Kanab. Kanab has a visitors center that will give you all the necessary information related to accommodation and restaurants. Hike : The hike to Wave is close to 6 miles and so be ready to walk in sand and on rocks. It can be managed by a novice hiker. I did do a mistake of going to Wave in June right in the middle of summer and the heat made hiking a bit of challenge. However, when you reach the Wave you will realize it is so much worth it. If you do go on this hike in summer make sure you carry enough water and be ready to walk on sand dunes. Access : In order to go to Wave one needs to apply fo...
