Salt Flats and Flamingos, India

24th Feb,2014

I'm on my yearly break from NYC financial markets visiting a small town in the southern Gujarat called Bhavnagar. If you Google the name you will come across a wiki page, a university link and some other useless links about Asias ship breaking yard and so on. This all sounds boring on a blog that in the past has discussed about beautiful hikes and Dalton highway.

I have always seen salt flats on the outskirts on Bhavnagar. If you are travelling by road during mid summer you will come across huge piles and piles of white snow like mountains. This is  actually salt that has dried from the sea water that was trapped. These mountains of snowflakes gives a false impression to your eyes as in the mid summer a resident of saurashtra can confirm that the day time temp reaches 42 degrees Celsius very easily.

But today is  a very pleasant evening. I take a ride with my aunt to these snow dunes where the water is yet not dried and my aunt, a photographer and a bird enthusiast herself, has confirmed a herd of Flamingos. Not more than 10 mins drive from the main city we reach these man made ponds. The first image that comes to ones mind is that of a Pink carpet floating on the water, these are actually flamingoes feasting. I have not seen these many in one place.

Incredible Wave - Utah

Wave / Vermillion Cliffs / Coyote Butte Location : Coyote Butte is located near Kanab Utah. The road to the trailhead is rough but one does not need a high clearance vehicle. Accommodation : I did see someone camp near the trailhead not sure if it is allowed. However, Kanab is a town and lot of accommodation can be found here. I used airbnb for my trip to Kanab. Kanab has a visitors center that will give you all the necessary information related to accommodation and restaurants. Hike : The hike to Wave is close to 6 miles and so be ready to walk in sand and on rocks. It can be managed by a novice hiker. I did do a mistake of going to Wave in June right in the middle of summer and the heat made hiking a bit of challenge. However, when you reach the Wave you will realize it is so much worth it. If you do go on this hike in summer make sure you carry enough water and be ready to walk on sand dunes. Access : In order to go to Wave one needs to apply fo...

Acadia National Park - Celebrating Labor Day Weekend - Part 1

Since the time i have been involved with outdoor activities i have been bias towards the West Coast. Somehow i ended developing this mental block where i started believing all the natural wonders in USA were in the West Coast. Being in finance i have always lived in the East Coast ( NYC to be more specific) and ended up planing a trip to Acadia National Park for the labor day weekend. My mental block just broke as soon as i stepped in Acadia. The park just engulfs you in its beauty and added to the beauty are its vast open seas shores, light houses and bald eagles. The Park has something for every one, you could be old and decide to sit on the beach and enjoy lobsters or you could be young and adventurous and  end up finishing the Preipice trail. The park offers something for everyone. My day began at 4:00 AM in the morning on Sept 04, 2015: The drive to Acadia from NYC is long about 8 hours as per google maps but you could end up taking about 10 hours easily if you lov...

Upper Antelope Canyon, Lower Antelope Canyon & Monuments Valley

Upper Antelope Canyon Day 1: Friday – March 27, 2015. The best part about being a consultant is you get to travel a lot. I used to work in Investment banking and hated it. I would like to say worked on Wall St. but that would be an exaggeration  J . But that’s my past and I am happy it is History. The good thing about consulting is travelling and the bad part is that you are stuck with client from the time you step into the office. When you leave it is almost dark and lose all the opportunity to explore the new place. But, it is not that bad either you get to try new restaurants and put on some good weight. This time I was in Dallas, Texas and had heard so many good things about the Antelope Canyon that I had to see it for myself. If you end up following National Geo on Instagram you will be surprised how little you know about the World we live in. I flew from Dallas TX to Phoenix AZ. If you like to spend a little more there is an airport in Page Arizona whi...
